“Hoje tudo o que eu tenho é graças à piscicultura”. Este é o depoimento de Cristiano Cunha de Paula, de 45 anos, da cidade de Patrocínio do Muriaé, na Zona da Mata mineira, mas é uma frase recorrente ao ouvir os produtores da região. Poucos sabem, mas Minas Gerais é responsável por 70% da produção nacional de peixes ornamentais, mais especificamente a região de Muriaé, um conjunto de oito municípios compõem o polo produtor desses animais.
Cerca de 400 famílias vivem da renda da produção de peixes ornamentais, o que caracteriza agricultura familiar. Essa cadeia produtiva movimenta mais de R$ 10 milhões ao ano e é uma cultura que tem características peculiares, bem diferentes das produções tradicionais da pecuária e agricultura, como o café e o gado de corte.
Para se ter uma ideia, com 1.000 m² já é possível ter uma produção dos peixes, um espaço ínfimo se comparado à produção de uma lavoura de café, por exemplo. O manejo dessa cultura também requer menos esforço do que a manutenção de um plantel de bovinos de leite, mas o maior atrativo para os produtores de peixes ornamentais é o baixo investimento para um alto retorno financeiro.
A história de Márcia Gomes do Nascimento, de 29 anos, comprova o fato. Segundo a produtora da zona rural de Patrocínio do Muriaé, “a criação de peixes ornamentais, além de ter uma boa rentabilidade, é uma terapia. É muito tranquilo”, conta.
A família de Márcia descobriu os peixes ornamentais quando se mudou de Divino, onde a produção de café é destaque, para Patrocínio do Muriaé com seus pais, um autônomo e uma bordadeira. Ao chegar ao novo destino, a família sentiu a necessidade de produzir mais renda. Seguindo os passos de sua vizinha, a mãe de Márcia decidiu iniciar sua própria produção.
A atividade começou de forma modesta, quando a menina tinha apenas nove anos. Construíram um poço de bambu e, juntas, conseguiram produzir seus primeiros peixes. Já na primeira produção, as vendas animaram a família, que com a renda, compraram lona para construir mais poços para produzirem mais. Vendo o quão promissor era a atividade, o pai de Márcia também se juntou a elas. Depois disso, a produção só cresceu.
Seguindo o caminho tradicional, Márcia chegou a iniciar a graduação em Engenharia de Produção, mas após o primeiro período, desistiu do curso sob protestos de uma das professoras porque sentia saudade “da roça”. “Não me sinto inferior às pessoas que estudam, pelo contrário, as parabenizo, mas me sinto muito realizada criando peixes. Hoje, com oito anos de casada, tenho coisas que meus pais, na minha idade, não tinham. Vivo confortavelmente e na roça. Minha casa é boa, toda em cerâmica, tenho carro, uma moto e até uma bicicleta. Tenho tudo isso por causa dos peixes”, celebra a produtora rural.
Em Patrocínio do Muriaé, Márcia conheceu Danilo Novaes de Paula, hoje com 31 anos, os dois se apaixonaram e estão casados há oito anos. Desde 2015 os dois mantêm sua própria piscicultura numa propriedade cedida pelos pais do rapaz. Quando iniciaram a produção, eles tinham apenas um barracão, mas aos poucos foram construindo, o que se transformou em uma bela casa de três quartos, sala, dois banheiros, um lavabo, garagem e cozinha integrada com área de lazer com churrasqueira.
Já Danilo conta que o casal trabalha de domingo a domingo, porém, na parte da manhã por causa do calor da estufa. No domingo, os dois se levantam às duas horas da madrugada para embalar os peixes que seguirão para diversos estados brasileiros e até para fora do Brasil. A folga vem apenas ao meio dia.
Danilo e Márcia trabalham cerca de seis horas por dia. Os números, o casal não revela, mas o lucro é de cerca de 60%.
A produção de peixes ornamentais é tão vantajosa, que fez Marcelo da Silva Gouveia Filho, de 29 anos, natural de Patrocínio do Muriaé, deixar o cargo público que tinha como funcionário da Transpetro, empresa pública de transporte e logística de combustíveis. Hoje, ele é formado em Administração de Empresas e cursa uma pós-graduação, mas dedica seus esforços na criação de peixes ornamentais.
Marcelo é produtor rural há cerca de um ano e conta que é possível iniciar a produção com baixo investimento, mas optou por investir um pouco mais, com a construção de estufas de alvenaria e lonas de melhor qualidade. Sua criação foi estabelecida na propriedade de Íria e José de Paula, seus sogros, que também criam peixes ornamentais. Os pais da esposa de Marcelo produzem peixes betta há 20 anos e criaram sua filha com a renda dessa criação.
“Quando pequena, minha filha sempre quis estudar, era um sonho que eu queria que ela realizasse porque eu só tenho o quarto ano primário”, conta Íria Fátima de Oliveira, de 54 anos. Hoje, a filha da produtora é formada e atua como advogada na cidade de Patrocínio do Muriaé, a 10 quilômetros da propriedade da mãe, onde o marido cria seus peixes.
A cidade de Patrocínio do Muriaé é conhecida como a capital nacional do peixe betta, espécie conhecida por ser um peixe de briga, devido à sua agressividade contra outros peixes. A criação dessa espécie é feita, atualmente, em garrafas pet, que permitem que um animal não esteja em contato com o outro.
Apesar de a cidade ser conhecida por esse tipo de peixe, há criação de outras espécies. A propriedade de Cristiano Cunha de Paula é um exemplo. Lá, Cristiano produz, além do betta, espécies como o acará, guppy e colisa. O produtor vende para todo o Brasil, com destaque para São Paulo e a região Sul do país.
Cristiano começou a atividade em 2001, quando trabalhava como profissional de serviços gerais em Patrocínio do Muriaé. No início, ele era atravessador da produção de um amigo e, percebendo a oportunidade, montou sua primeira estufa. Sua produção era pequena e ele se dividia entre as duas atividades. Nos fins de semana, ao invés de se divertir, Cristiano trabalhava com os peixes. Com o crescimento da produção, ele precisou da ajuda dos seus pais. Em pouco tempo, percebeu que poderia viver da piscicultura e pediu demissão do emprego. A própria produção o permitiu melhorar sua estrutura. Hoje, ele tem estufas altamente tecnificadas, com material de ponta, muito mais resistente.
O que se percebe na produção dos peixes ornamentais é a facilidade de manejo e a presença da agricultura familiar. Ainda que muitas das propriedades tenham uma grande estrutura, as pessoas de uma mesma família trabalham juntamente com outros funcionários. Além disso, a atividade é um legado cultural na região, que se tornou tão próspera graças a Paulo Braz, advogado que levou a novidade para a região na década de 80.
Números que impressionam
O polo produtor de peixes ornamentais é compreendido pelos municípios de Patrocínio do Muriaé, Vieiras, Eugenópolis, Miradouro, Barão do Monte Alto, Muriaé, Rosário da Limeira e São Francisco do Glória. O último estudo, desenvolvido pelo Instituto Federal Sudeste de Minas Gerais, campus Muriaé, identificou 225 propriedades com cultivo de peixes ornamentais em sete municípios pesquisados.
O estudo comprovou que o maior número de produtores de peixes ornamentais do polo está concentrado na cidade de Patrocínio do Muriaé, seguido das cidades de Vieiras e São Francisco do Glória. Além disso, 85% dos produtores entrevistados têm de 30 a 49 anos e 68% da mão de obra empregada na produção da região é composta pelos próprios familiares.
De acordo com as informações obtidas pela pesquisa, no ano de 2021, a região produziu quase 8 milhões de exemplares de peixes ornamentais, gerando uma receita bruta de mais de R$ 10 milhões. Essa produção é distribuída nos estados de Minas Gerais, seguido dos estados da Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo.
Segundo os dados dessa pesquisa, somente no ano de 2021, a rentabilidade mensal foi de quase R$ 9 mil por hectare. O estudo também aponta que o potencial de produção é ainda maior, pois a atividade ainda é carente de assistência técnica especializada e faltam políticas públicas voltadas para o setor.
Percebendo a necessidade de apoio aos produtores e entendendo a importância da atividade na região, o Governo de Minas tem se mobilizado para instituir uma legislação própria para a cadeia produtiva dos peixes ornamentais que hoje tem que seguir as normas da produção dos peixes de corte. A iniciativa, que partiu da Secretaria de Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento (Seapa) e do Instituto Mineiro de Agropecuária (IMA) em conjunto com a Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (Epamig), vinculados à Seapa, teve início com uma visita técnica à região no ano de 2023.
Como a produção é antiga na região, IMA e Epamig já desenvolvem um trabalho conjunto: o IMA cuidando das questões de sanidade e a Epamig com pesquisas diversas de manejo, reprodução e qualidade da água, em sua fazenda experimental, na cidade de Leopoldina. “A parceria IMA e Epamig traz apoio ao produtor e melhoramento da produção”, conta Alexmiliano de Oliveira, pesquisador em piscicultura da Epamig.
Legislação própria
O grupo de municípios produtores de peixes ornamentais se juntou a órgãos do Governo de Minas para definir uma legislação própria e estudar melhores práticas para esta cultura. Maria José Firmo, coordenadora regional do IMA em Viçosa, é uma representante do poder público no grupo e entusiasta da cadeia produtiva dos peixes ornamentais. “Atualmente todo produtor de peixe ornamental deve ser registrado no IMA e seguir a legislação vigente, mas é urgente termos uma legislação própria para este fim. Já temos uma comissão formada por nossos técnicos e especialistas da área para formular uma portaria que regule esta produção tão importante para nossa região”, diz a médica veterinária.
No início de março deste ano, a coordenadora do IMA organizou uma reunião com mais de dez distribuidores de peixes ornamentais da região que, segundo eles próprios, são responsáveis por 95% da distribuição da produção comercializada no país. “Queremos preservar a produção e a história envolvida na atividade, agregando valor à região, que tem famílias que dependem desse ramo”, revela Maria José.
Ainda segundo a fiscal agropecuário, é importante que um órgão fiscalizador, como o IMA, esteja próximo do produtor para entender melhor a produção e a distribuição dos peixes e, assim, identificar pontos de risco sanitário e preservar a atividade. Ela ainda conta que a cadeia produtiva recebe muito bem a iniciativa do órgão, apesar de saber que há penalidades, caso a legislação não seja cumprida.
Maria José ressalta a diferença entre o peixe de corte, aquele que é destinado ao consumo, e os peixes ornamentais, que apenas embelezam os ambientes. “A nova legislação vai proporcionar aos produtores um prazo para adequação de suas atividades, antes da aplicação das questões legais”, garante a coordenadora.
Ainda em março deste ano, o IMA lançará consulta pública sobre a nova portaria, uma oportunidade de a sociedade conhecer o que está sendo proposto pelo governo e opinar a respeito. A expectativa é que a nova legislação seja publicada ainda no primeiro semestre de 2024.
