Há 25 anos, a Princesa Diana morria aos 36 anos em um acidente de carro. A tragédia aconteceu no dia 31 de agosto de 1997, no túnel da Ponte de l’Alma, em Paris, na França. Ela estava sendo seguida por paparazzi e acompanhada do namorado, o herdeiro egípcio milionário Dodi Al-Fayed, de um guarda-costas e do motorista. Al-Fayed e o condutor do veículo morreram na hora, e Diana morreu horas mais tarde, no hospital. O guarda-costas foi o único sobrevivente.
Ainda que a morte de Lady Di tenha ocorrido há décadas, há incógnitas e teorias da conspiração que rondam o caso. Boatos de noivado e gravidez
Apesar de , os boatos de um possível noivado começaram a surgir já no final de agosto de 1997.
Michael Cole, relações públicas de Fayed na época, disse em inquérito que Dodi havia dito a ele que pretendia se casar com Diana cerca de um mês antes do acidente. Há também vídeos de baixa qualidade que mostram Claude Rolet, funcionário do Hotel Ritz, onde o casal estava hospedado na capital francesa, visitando uma joalheria nas redondezas e, mais tarde, levando um item para o quarto de Diana e Dodi no local. Na acomodação, um anel e uma nota fiscal com o registro de um “anel de noivado” foram encontrados.

Álcool no sangue do motorista
Durante as investigações, também se questionou a confiabilidade dos exames feitos no sangue do motorista Henri Paul. O nível de álcool no sangue de Paul estava três vezes acima do limite na França e ele tinha níveis “terapêuticos” de remédios antipsicóticos e antidepressivos em seu corpo. A velocidade do carro também estava três vezes acima da permitida na via, e especialistas afirmaram que marcas no chão indicavam que Paul perdeu o controle do veículo antes de entrar no túnel.
Funcionários do bar do Hotel Ritz prestaram depoimento, e alguns disseram que o motorista não mostrava sinais de embriaguez, enquanto um deles afirmou que o motorista estava bêbado e “andando como um palhaço”. Outras testemunhas afirmaram que ele dirigia de forma inconsequente.
As dúvidas quanto aos resultados dos exames surgiram porque o nível de monóxido de carbono no corpo de Paul também estava anormalmente alto, o que foi atribuído a um erro na manipulação das amostras. Possível colisão com um Fiat Uno
Uma análise da Mercedes em que Diana estava revelou traços de tinta que apontavam que o carro pode ter colidido de leve com um Fiat Uno branco. Semanas depois, duas testemunhas afirmaram que viram um carro de mesmo modelo e cor pouco depois da batida. As autoridades francesas examinaram mais de 5 mil veículos, mas nunca encontraram o carro.
Em novembro de 1997, a polícia prendeu Thanh Le Van, um segurança que tinha um carro similar. O veículo foi pintado e mudou o para-choques pouco depois do acidente de Diana. A revista Vanity Fair publicou que “uma análise química mostrou que a tinta original era compatível com a encontrada na Mercedes”. No entanto, Le Van tinha um álibi: estava trabalhando no momento do acidente. Com isso, as investigações não seguiram em frente.
Dinheiro e suposta associação à agência de inteligência britânica
Um ano após o acidente, Richard Tomlinson, ex-espião britânico, disse ao jornal People que o acidente que matou Diana era similar a um plano do MI6, o serviço secreto britânico, de matar o ex-presidente da Sérvia Slobodan Milosevic. Segundo ele, o projeto incluía o uso de um forte flash de luz e um túnel. O britânico também sugeriu que o motorista Henri Paul poderia estar envolvido com o serviço secreto. Testemunhas que estavam no local do acidente disseram ter visto um forte flash de luz no momento da colisão.
No entanto, não há nenhuma evidência além do depoimento do espião de que Henri Paul estava envolvido com o MI6. As contas bancárias de Henri Paul também foram investigadas pela Polícia Metropolitana de Londres.
